Bacteria can be transmitted to unborn child

Good oral hygiene can reduce complications in pregnancy and problems in newborns In the past, many studies have demonstrated a growing trend between periodontitis and perinatal mortality. A recent study presented at the Society for General Microbiology in Harrogate, England, has found that bacteria from a mother's mouth can be transmitted through the blood and amniotic fluid in the womb to her unborn child.

The study found 46 different species of bacteria in gastric aspirates of 57 newborn babies. Two of the species found are specific to the oral cavity, Granulicateila elegans and Streptococcus sinensis.

These are known to be able to enter the bloodstream and have been associated with infective endocarditis and other infections in the body. Many scientists believe that these pathogenics may cause a cascade of inflammation that can lead to premature births, low birth-weight, or infection of the newborn.
